LEGAL LESSON OF THE DAY: Case of the Cockroach in the Popcorn Burrito
Before we get into the Law of Torts, allow this reporter to ask: what is a popcorn burrito?
Anyway, it’s probably not crucial to the legal lesson. Let us proceed:
A lovely lady called Ms Donoghue went to a cafe with her friend one day in the early 1930s and her friend bought her a ginger beer. Ms Donoghue drank a bit of it, then, to Ms Donoghue’s great distress, a decomposed snail floated to the surface of her ginger beer. Gasp.
*crickets* and *French people saying, “So what?”*
The case of Donoghue v. Stevenson, the maker of the ginger beer, went all the way to the English House of Lords, where they found that Ms Donoghue was entitled to compensation.
AND SO, and so, this case will be of great consolation to our Food Writer in Perthville, who today visited the 1-star popcorn cafe and found a cockroach in her popcorn burrito.
